A survey was conducted with a total of 26 students from two beginning German classes. They were asked whether they preferred to give traditional in-class (non-digital) presentations, or give online presentations via Flipgrid. The majority preferred online presentations.
In the survey, the students were asked to describe the advantages of online presentations. The advantages are summarized below in bar graph form.
The ability to record their presentations as many times as needed was one of the main advantages mentioned by the students. Students could perfect their pronunciation and fluency in this manner. Furthermore, having the ability to record multiple times also lessened the stress and pressure of giving a presentation, since they could simply re-record the presentation if they made any mistakes, and it is easier for some students to record a presentation on their own in comparison to standing in front of a classroom of their peers. Students also mentioned that they liked the flexibility of being able to do the presentation at a time that fit their needs. Finally, students listed the ability to watch other students’ performances as well as their own as an advantage. In a traditional in-class presentation setting, some students said they would be so nervous about their own upcoming presentations that they couldn’t really focus on the other students’ talks, and they appreciated the ability to watch other students’ work multiple times until they understood everything they said.
A Sampling of Student Responses
"I prefer doing presentations on Flipgrid because I am able to watch and hear myself present multiple times. Also I think it’s easier to learn from other students who post their videos and to have the as examples. When I listen to them in class, I don’t think I retain as much, especially if I’m also anticipating presenting myself. Another upside is the flexibility for time. As a grad student, I appreciate having a few days to upload the video and the chance to work around my schedule."
"When my classmates do the presentations in-class, sometimes I don’t understand what they are talking about. When my classmates do the presentations online, I can repeat what they said."
"I prefer online presentations via Flipgrid because it gives us the flexibility to repeat our presentation and gives people who have social anxiety a way of presenting without feeling as judged or pressured as in-class presentations would. This way is also better because we have the opportunity to keep practicing until we do it correctly and reflecting on our performance along the way."
"I personally don’t really like speaking [in front of] people so it’s easier for me to make a video of myself instead of talking to the whole class. Also, on Flipgrid you can do your presentations multiple times until it’s ‘perfect’."
"I prefer online presentations because I have the opportunity to correct mistakes I make and more flexibility with when I can complete it."
